How to Measure for Curtains and Blinds

How to measure curtains

 Preferably, affix the track or pole before taking your measurements

• The track or pole should extend beyond the window at either side to allow room for the curtains to be drawn back off the window when they are open. We would usually recommend approx 25cm but this all depends on how much space you have and how far you would like the curtains to be off the window.
• Always use a metal tape measure as cloth or plastic ones can stretch.
• We can accept measurements in centimetres or inches but please make sure all measurements are either one or the other!

Curtain Width – do not measure the window width!

Track – measure the track from end to end. If the track overlaps in the middle, you must include the overlap.

Pole – measure the pole between the finials.

Curtain Length – do not measure the window length!

Tracks – measure from the top of the track to allow the track to be hidden by the curtains when they are closed

Poles – if you want the curtains to hang below the pole, measure from the underside of the ring;

Poles – if you want the curtains to hang above the pole, measure from the topside of the ring;

For Eyelet curtains, measure from the top of the pole

Measure from either of these points to;

SILL – 1cm above the sill

FULL LENGTH – 1cm above the carpet

BELOW SILL – the desired length

Or if you would like the curtains to puddle on to the floor, add the desired amount onto the FULL LENGTH measurement

How to measure blinds

Blinds can either sit inside or outside a window recess. Once you’ve decided where you would like the blind to sit, you can start on the measurements.

Always supply measurements Width x Drop, and in either CM’s or inches, not a combination of both.

Width (inside recess) – measure the tight recess size at the top and the bottom of the window recess

Width (outside recess) – measure the width required. When ordering it is important to state if this is the size you would like the fabric to be, or if on a roller blind, it is the pin-to-pin measurement.

Drop (inside recess) – measure the tight recess size from top to bottom

Drop (outside recess) – measure the drop required.

A few notes on blinds;

• Stripes & checks cannot be guaranteed to come out straight, especially on roller blinds. We would not recommend using a check fabric on roller blinds.
• Most fabrics can be used for Roman blinds
• Roller blinds are available in a wide range of roller blind fabrics and we can make them up in many other fabrics of your choice
• Blinds that are wider than the width of the fabric will have two joins at the sides of the blinds, not one down the centre
